What is the difference between a crisp, cobbler, crumble and a pie?
I am a big fan of any crisp recipe, but pies and cobblers are also great! But they are different.
A crisp is generally fruit, topped with a mixture of oats, nuts, flour, butter and sugar baked until it is crispy.
A crumble is the same thing as a crisp.
A cobbler is usually fruit topped with a cake-like or biscuit-type batter. The topping isn't usually smooth, but dropped on top with a spoon or in balls, and baked until browned.
A pie has a smooth pastry bottom, filling and a pastry top is optional. Pies can be filled with a variety of things like fruit, nuts, mousse, pudding, custards, tart filling and so many other options!
Can I modify this cherry crisp recipe?
Sure! It is really easy to switch out the cherry filling for any other filling you like! Some of my favorites are apple pie filling, blueberry pie filling, peach pie filling or a mixed berry pie filling!
You can, of course, make your own pie filling using fresh or frozen fruit, sugar, cornstarch and maybe a little water, boiled until the fruit is soft and the sauce is thick. But if you want to keep it really simple, using store-bought pie filling is a great option!
And of course, the best crisp recipes are topped with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream! YUM!
