What is the difference between stonecutting and stone carving in Dwarf Fortress? ›

From what I get, Stonecutting is for smoothing stone and making stone blocks; Stonecarving is for making stone furniture.

Masonry is making things at a mason workshop. Stone carving is making things out of stone at a craftsdwarf's workshop.

Bins = Storage for a lot of things but not stones, ores, wood & furniture. If you want to neatly store wood, ores, stones & furniture (more so the first 3) you need to use a quantum stockpile which allows you to store more than 1 item on a tile.

Types of stone used in carved sculptures

Limestone and sandstone, at about 4 on the Mohs scale, are the only sedimentary stones commonly carved. Limestone comes in a popular oolitic variety, about twice as hard as alabaster, that is excellent for carving. The harder serpentines can also reach 4 on the Mohs scale.

co*ke comes from processing a either Bituminous Coal or Lignite in a smelter, consuming one unit of fuel and one unit ore, and producing five (if using lignite) or nine (if using bituminous coal) bars of co*ke.

dwarves should automatically use bins for appropriate items, assuming the stockpile allows container use. check your stockpile settings, should be an option to change whether the stockpile allows bins/wheelbarrows or not, and how many max.

Towards the bottom of the screen, you'll see a few buttons have popped up over the Stockpile icon. Click the one that looks like an eraser, then draw over the area you want to get rid of.

Stonecutter is the skill associated with the stonecutting labor. Stonecutters are responsible for smoothing walls, carving walls into fortifications, carving minecart tracks into floors and ramps, and making rock blocks at a stoneworker's workshop. Graphically, stonecutters wear all white clothes.

Stonecutting is also more efficient than crafting for certain recipes. Crafting stairs is more efficient with a stonecutter than a crafting table, as 6 full blocks are crafted into 4 stairs, while stonecutter yields 1 stair per full block.

Do they prefer one of those? Smoothed stone has a much higher value, and will thus make them happier. You can increase the value even more by engraving it after smoothing, which you can't do with constructed walls. Floors work similarly.

Pillars are just walls that are either by themselves or on the end of a wall. Once your dwarves finish building those last few designated spots they should convert from pillars into normal wall tiles. It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
