Place 1 cup water in the Instant Pot, then place the steamer rack in the Instant Pot (this one was included with the Instant Pot I bought). You could also use a steamer basket if you have one.

Cook on MANUAL, LOW PRESSURE for 0-2 minutes, depending how soft you like your green beans. For firmer green beans cook for 0, for softer green beans cook for 2. (We usually cook ours for 1 minute).

We don’t recommend using high pressure to cook them because even cooking them for 0 minutes, the beans turn out a lot softer than we like.

QUICK RELEASE once the time has expired. If setting your time to zero, I promise your green beans will still cook – they steam as the Instant Pot comes to pressure.

Open the lid carefully, then remove green beans from the instant pot and toss with melted butter and season with salt and pepper. Serve warm.

Can I use frozen green beans?

Yes! We still think fresh green beans taste best, but because frozen green beans are usually partially cooked, you probably won’t need to change the time at all.

Other variations

We love these green beans seasoned with just butter and salt and pepper, but there are other ways to season them, too.

  • Toss with olive oil and grated Parmesan cheese
  • Squeezed with fresh lemon juice and zest
  • Minced garlic or garlic salt
  • Tossed with brown sugar and bacon (like this recipe)
  • Served with candied pecans
  • Stir-fry them with garlic and ginger once cooked for a crispy, Asian-style side dish

FAQs

What is the ratio of beans to water in instant pot? ›

What is the Ratio of Beans to Water in the Instant Pot? When cooking beans in the Instant Pot, you'll use 2 1/2 cups of water for every 1 cup of dry beans. I've tried using less than that, but since beans expand as they cook, the ones that aren't fully submerged in liquid will cook unevenly.

How to can green beans with an instant pot? ›

Choose freshly picked green beans, rinse clean, snap to bite-size pieces, place in jars and cover with boiling water, then pressure can for just 20 minutes! Easy peasy and no need to pre-cook or blanch your green beans.

Why are my beans not cooked in instant pot? ›

If your beans aren't quite done, here's what to do: Put the lid back on the pressure cooker and make sure the release valve is set back to "sealing." Cook at high pressure for another 5 to 10 minutes (depending on if you think your beans need just a little more time or a little more time to finish).

How long to pressure can green beans? ›

Ladle boiling water over beans/salt, leaving a 1" headspace. Remove air bubbles with canning knife and add additional beans or water as needed. Adjust 2-piece lids to finger tightness. Process pints for 20 minutes and quarts for 25 minutes, at 10 pounds pressure in a pressure canner.

Can you overcook beans in an Instant Pot? ›

Yes, technically speaking, you can cook beans in the Instant Pot without soaking. However, you will find that the cooking times can be all over the place, and the final product is often inconsistent. Some beans will be overcooked and completely decimated, while others are still gritty or firm in the center.

Are beans better in slow cooker or Instant Pot? ›

Takeaway. Cooking beans in an Instant Pot and slow cooker results in beans that are evenly cooked, intact, and creamy. Both methods were ranked as easy, however, considering the amount of cook time required for slow cooker beans, the Instant Pot method comes out on top.

How do you thicken beans in an Instant Pot? ›

For thicker bean broth, let your beans simmer after cooking

You can keep them right in your Instant Pot and use the sauté function, with the lid off. Give the beans an occasional stir, and remove from the heat when the bean broth is just slightly runnier than you'd like - it will continue to thicken as the beans cool.

Why are my beans still hard after pressure cooking? ›

This is because without enough liquid your Instant Pot will not come back up to pressure and that causes a whole new set of issues. To solve it, add some liquid and try again. If the beans are extremely hard or barely cooked, I might set it for 8 or 9 minutes.

Can you overcook green beans? ›

Don't overcook them!

Nothing is worse than a mushy, overcooked green bean. Crisp and slightly tender beans is the goal. To achieve this, taste a bean or two during the cooking process. If it is too crispy for you, keep cooking, testing another green bean in a minute or two.

What pressure do you use for green beans? ›

Place jars in pressure canner and process at 10 pounds of pressure; process quarts for 25 minutes and pints for 20 minutes. Green beans with bacon make a yummy side dish not to mention a great starter for green bean casserole this Thanksgiving!

How much water do I need for 2 cups of beans? ›

In a large pot, add 6 cups of water for each pound (2 cups) of dry beans. Heat to boiling; boil for 2–3 minutes.

What is the best water to bean ratio? ›

Get to know the golden ratio

For drip coffee brewing — which encompasses most home coffeemakers, bulk brewers and pour-overs — Helfen says that the ratio of 60 grams of coffee to one liter of water, or roughly 1:17, is the one most commonly used by coffee pros (and is often referred to as “the golden ratio”).

What is the ratio of liquid to dry beans? ›

Add 3 cups clean water for every 1 cup of dry beans. Bring to a boil; turn the heat down to low and cook slowly until tenter - about 2 hours. Check the beans often to make sure there is enough water in the pot, if not add more water and continue to cook.

What is the pour over bean to water ratio? ›

Pour Over Coffee Ratio

A good starting point for pour over coffee is a 16:1 water-to-coffee ratio (16 grams of water to 1 gram of coffee). However, the ideal ratio ultimately depends on your personal taste preferences.
