Volume 32 January, 1988 No. 1

FROM YOUR PRESIDENT.. .DAVE LOUCKS LIABILITY INSURANCE PACKAGE ACCEPTED. Yes, the NHPA now has a policy for the entire member-

ship. The Executive Council at the November meeting in Las Vegas, unanimously approved an insurance proposal presented by a representative of Transamerica Insurance. It becomes effective January 1st.

All State Charter Presidents and Secy/Treas., have been mailed a letter outlining the policy coverage and payment details. The cost is $2.00 per member per year and will cover sanctioned tournaments and league play. It is a broad form, single limit, $1,000,000 Spectator Liability policy and should be more than sufficient to meet the needs of all clubs and/or municipalities.

Not being experts in the field of insurance, thre are sure to be many questions. Initially, my wife Cathie, who has some background int he field, will work with the States as the NHPA insurance coordinator. Clubs and Leagues are asked to work through their State secretary or appointed officer for insurance information. We must all be patient as it will take a while for the information to get to all members. But get to them it must because this is a program that all NHPA members must support. It offers a lot of protection for a very small cost.

DAVE'S COURT REPORT

The NHPA Council approved a basic schedule of play and prize list for the 1988 Pleasanton World Tournament. Total prize money is expected to reach $65,000. We had many suggestions for improvement and incorporated those which we think will bring more uniformity, better scheduling and overall improve-ment to the event. Complete details to appear in the February Digest. . . . Don't forget the deadline for any proposed changes to the Constitution and By-Laws. They must be in the hands of 4th V.P., Bonnie Seibold by January 31, 1988. . . . Regional Tournaments will come into play this year. Your president modified the informal proposal made at the Eau Claire Convention after much delegate discussion. The most important issue is to get started. Ponca City, OK has already been approved for a Regional in May 1988. Other interested sites should write me or Donnie Roberts for details. . . . Kevin Cone has resigned as NHPA Statistician/Historian. We'll miss your contributions. Thanks for all the past work and service for the NHPA.

BEVERLY BORN named new SANCTIONED CLUB/LEAGUE PROGRAM DIRECTOR. Bev is the current Oklahoma State Secretary/Treasurer and has been the League Director of the Ellis County Horseshoe Pitchers Association since 1985. She and her husband Floyd, both active pitchers, live in Shattuck, OK., where they have their own business, Born's Mercantile. Bev is stepping in to fill the position of the former director, Doc Dougherty who passed away in November. It will take a while to assemble and transfer the many files and equipment to Bev and, for her to become familiar with all the position responsi-bilities. All League Directors are asked to exercise patience and cooperation as Beverly makes this transition. Her mailing address is: RR 2 Box 198A, Shattuck, OK 73858, Phone days 405/938-5100, evening 405/938-2406.

WALTER RAY WILLIAMS, JR., accepts position as NHPA Statistician/Historian. Walter, who is well known to the NHPA membership, will be taking over the function previously held by Kevin Cone who recently resigned. Walter has a great many files and records which he can add to those now being utilized. His interest and experience in computers will serve him and the NHPA well in this position. Due to the demands of the PBA schedule, Walter may not always be able to respond promptly to member inquiries. His knowledge, interest and awareness of the game, hwoever, will be primary in serving NHPA needs. For contact, write: Walter Ray Williams, Jr., 2319 Piccardo Circle, Stockton, CA 95207-6590.

LAS VEGAS-HACIENDA BANQUET TALK BY DAVE LOUCKS It is often difficult to convey a message of sincerity and thanks when more than but a few people are

involved. As I look out over your faces, I see many old friends as well as some new ones. It is that primary ingredient that binds our sport together, Friendship. The Hacienda Event has certainly done its share to bring old and new friendships together.

Tonight we are bringing to a close our 5th year here. In this and each of the others, we have had obstacles to clear and challenges to meet. We have done our best for what we feel will benefit the greatest number and realize that not all of you will always agree. Nonetheless, this tournament has grown as has our admiration for the man most responsible. It grieves me to hear some of you comment that what is offered is not enough. Sure, you may be able to find a cheaper room in town or maybe a newer facility. But, the fact remains that the Hacienda Hotel has been instrumental in the promotion of our sport. They have been giving as well. $10.00 per entry is added to the prize fund. This large banquet room, which normally rents for $2,000 per day is donated free for some four-five days and nights for a relatively small group of people. Over $3,000 is spent by the Hotel for labor to install, maintain and remove 18 horseshoe courts that were purchased by the Hacienda. To me, this is a sure sign of giving and, as NHPA President and a horseshoe pitcher, I'm damn grateful for the opportunity to be here. The rest of you should be as well.

We will be back next year. The dates will be Sunday, November 27th, thru December 1st. Hopefully, by February, we will have new flyers out with details on some of the changes and improvements we hope to make. The Hotel will be working with us on an improvement to the rubber pitching surface and other items for the convenience of pitchers and scorekeepers. Current Hotel management has assured me of their commitment to this tournament and, within reason, will devote the expenditures necessary to improve it.

I now ask all of you to join me in giving the man responsible, Vice-President and General Manager, Clem Bernier, a sound and meaningful applaud of thanks.

NOTE: An error was pointed out to me at an officers meeting in Las Vegas on my October report. On line 9 receipts of that report show $7780.00 as 1987 World Finals Fees. That figure should have been $3780.00. An eleventh line should have read 1989 Spearfish World bid deposit $4000.00. Please make these adjustments on the report if you keep them. The reports will then agree with my ledgers. You will note on this report $3080.00 in finals fees which brings the total finals fees to $6860.00 which again matches my ledgers and the fees collected.

NOTE: These figures reflect only the books of the NHPA Secretary-Treasurer. NHPA monies handled by others are not shown.

HELP ME GET HORSESHOE RULES MORE COMPLETE By DONNIE ROBERTS

Every tournament that you or I go to, a situation always comes up that isn't covered in the rules. This happens in leagues, too. The fact is that the horseshoe rules just aren't complete. What happens if the peg breaks? What if I throw your shoe? What if I pitch out of turn? Can a woman pitch 38 feet? Is the clay to be level at the start of the game? Can I switch shoes during a game? Can a scorekeeper measure shoes? Can I carry 5 shoes during a game while pitching only two? What happens when the judge moves the shoe while measuring? Can I shovel the court during the game? The list goes on and on.

Can you picture a football game on Sunday afternoon, a big play happens, the striped shirts all huddle, and then announce that what just took place isn't in the rules but this is what we decided to do. That is what we do in horseshoe and it just isn't good for our sport. Let's get the rules in writing.

You can help! How? Each of you has either experienced or know of something not covered in the rules. Sit down today and write me a note about the item not covered by our rules. I will compile, edit, and apply them to our rules. They will be submitted to the Constitution and By-Laws Committee to follow the proper approval process at the convention. I must submit these by January 31, 1988, so please hurry.

With your help, we can make a difference.

1988 WORLD TOURNAMENT—PLEASANTON, CALIFORNIA By DONNIE ROBERTS

Dave Loucks and I visited the site of the 1988 World Horseshoe Tournament November 21, 22, and 23, 1987. We were guests of the Northern California officials in Pleasanton.

We spent several hours on two different days viewing the Alameda County Fairgrounds facility where the tournament will be held. Forty official courts under cover will be provided. Just a short walk away are 12 official practice courts with lights. There are plenty of restroom facilities, plenty of shower facilities, a tremendous amount of space for families and children, unlimited RV facilities near the courts, a golf course, easy access, many concession areas, all kinds of motels and hotels at affordable rates, eating places of all varieties, just a lovely place for a World Horseshoe Tournament.

Those who plan to go should be making plans with the Northern California people immediately if you travel by RV. If you plan to stay in a motel you must make plans no later than June 30,1988. Earlier would be best if you can. be sure to let all motels and hotels know that you are a horseshoe pitcher when you make contact. A listing of such facilities was published in the Digest for your use.

A special thanks to Dave & Cathie Loucks, Mr. & Mrs. Marty Dunn, and Mr. & Mrs. Lee Henninger for their fine hospitality during my visit to Northern California.

Two Hundred Sixty-Four horseshoe pitchers traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in the Fifth Annual Hacienda Hotel & Casino Horseshoe Tournament held November 15-19, 1987. Over one hundred pitchers have been to all five events. Thirty-Four states and four Canadian Provinces were represented.

Two hundred two entries were men and sixty-two were women. This was an NHPA sanctioned event. $17,490.00 was awarded in prize money Of the 264 entries, 132 received at least $50.00 in prize money, with 66 getting $100.00 or more. 11 pitchers earned $400 each.

California had 58 entries, Alberta-Canada 19, Colorado 19, Illinois 15, Minnesota 14, Arizona 12, Nevada 10, New Mexico 9, Oregon-Kansas-Vermont-Idaho 7 each, Ohio-Nebraska 6 each. All other states or provinces had 5 entries or less.

A fine cocktail party got the event underway on Sunday evening. The pitchers were all welcomed by Clem Bernier, Vice-President & General Manager of the Hacienda Hotel & Casino. This was a mixed handicapped event with 11 class of 24 pitchers each. Every pitcher played a minimum of 11 games. 66 pitchers made the ladder finals on Thursday and played more than 11 games. All games were 50 shoe cancellation.

Thursday evening was a fine banquet with a sit down dinner, the presentation of prize money (all in cash), and a live band. Clem Bernier had many kind words for the pitchers. The pitchers, also, had many kind words for Clem, a strong supporter of our sport.

Dave Loucks & Donnie Roberts were the tournament directors. Tournament officials were: Elden Sarbaugh, cathie Loucks, Vicky Oglesby, Don Weaver, Billie Pennington, Genevieve Lavett, Gayle Og-lesby, Bonnie Seibold, Ruth Padgett, Bill Padgett, and Dorothy Yeager.

The dates for the 1988 event were announced. Everyone should plan to attend the Sixth Annual event at the Hacienda November 27 through December 1, 1988.

NHPA PROMOTION COMMITTEE By SOL BERMAN

WALTER RAY WILLIAMS AND PBA TOUR The Brunswick Memorial World Open was held in Chicago, Illinois on November 14, 1987. Walter Ray Williams, Jr. finished second. He is now 4th in the 1987 money list. He won $17,000 to bring

his year's total to $127,350.00, which has brought his total PBA earnings over $00,00. Since joining the PBA he has registered nine - 300 games.

HERE AND THERE AT 1987 W.T.—(PART 2) By GLENN PORTT

People and things worth mentioning . . . Al sandham's contribution to the NHPA of those large NHPA Logo signs seen at the W.T. They can be used for many events. Al is the Regional Director for Georgia, an assistant NHPA Publicity Director, and a Rockwell VIP. . . Billie Sue Pennington and daughter from the Golden Eagles Club of San Jose. These ladies spent many hours working with the computer, and coming out with valuable programs for the future . . . Genevieve Lavett, for another year of hard work . . . Don Titcomb, who fell short in a valiant try to turn back the years in his quest for another world title. His match with Ben Wiedrich, Oregon, was one of the best of the tournament. Don won the title in 1960 . . . 267 years ago . . . with a mere 84.9%.

And how about Ray Hill, Michigan, who set a world record of 76.6% in the Senior Men's Division? This was Ray's first W.T. but you can bet he'll be back. He loved the raised courts as that is what he pitches on. Debbie Bestul set a world record by winning her 3rd world title in the Junior Girls' Division and will be shooting for a fourth in '88. Junior Boys' Champ Kipp Barody, New York, pitched an outstanding 84.3% (12 games) but fell short of Alan Francis' mark of 88.8% (11 games) and Walter Ray Williams record 89.2% (7 games).

Everyone has a bad year. This seemed to be the one for Mark Seibold, Kevin Cone, and Al Perry Mark (the quiet one), and always the perfect gentleman, will never make an excuse. However, he does throw a low shoe and he was having trouble throwing short shoes due to the clay being about 5-6 inches above floor level. This was the World Tournament. Although not feasible to cut holes in the floor to get the courts at ground level, it was possible to have raised pitching boxes or to adjust the foul line. (My personal feelings are that pitchers should not practice all year on ground level courts and then find the condition changed at the W.T.)

Others observed appearing to throw more than their normal share of short shoes were Ben Wiedrich, Phyllis Negaard, and Walter Ray Williams. Walter Ray finished with a very fine 79.8% (third best), but was not throwing the high floating shoe he has thrown in the past. He appears to have changed his style to more of a "driving throw . . . very much like his bowling style . . . which might account for his short shoes. Regardless, I would like to be able to throw several short shoes and still average 80 percent.

The convention? What can one say? Long drawn out and tiresome for everybody! Most delegates had their ballots marked before the start. Perhaps they should all be mailed in and counted before the convention . . . and only those items which failed to pass by the required majority or two-thirds vote should be brought to the floor. Anyway, our President had the patience of a saint . . . is to be congratulated for same . . . and will henceforth be known as Saint David.

Two things which came out of the conveniton which I consider important were the delegates voting to go ahead with an insurance liability plan which will cost members approximately $3 per year, and voting to accept Hall of Famer Al Zadroga's, Jim Solomon's, and Clyde Martz's study on standardizing backboards and fences as part of the NHPA's package on constructing horseshoe courts. Both of these were badly needed . . . so to the delegates . . . you DONE good!

WARRENVILLE, ILL. VFW LEAGUE CLOSES—SAN. 84C95 The 19th District VFW Horseshoe League of Warrenville, III., salutes its members who came to play

faithfully, in spite of the 100° heat of July and the flooding of August. The spread in age and ability had very little to do with the spirit that continued all summer. The

experience of years earned a 50% patch for Richard Feiden, and a rookie award to Tom Reeder. Six members successfully earned a 40% patch and all 35 members showed expertise under trying conditions.

Warrenville's team managed to keep the trophy at the post for hte third year. With such good results this year, there is much interest in expanding the league. The possibility of having

two disivisons in competition next season is under discussion by members of the board and interested clubs.

NEWBURGH, N.Y. HORSESHOE PITCHERS RAISE $12,000 FOR MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION

The Mid-Hudson Horseshoe Pitchers Association raised $12,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Associ-ation through its fourth annual horseshoe-a-thon.

The fundraising event, held at Lockwood's Tavern, Recreation Park, Ideal Spot and the Hudson Raider Athletic Club, is sponsored by Budweiser and Bud Light.

Members of the association gathered at Lockwood's Thursday night to celebrate the success of the horseshoe-a-thon and to honor those who contributed to that success. Spuds Mackenzie, the dog who serves as pitchman for Bud Light, dropped by to offer congratulations.

The principal event of the annual horseshoe-a-thon is a horseshoe-pitching contest. Contestants get sponsors to pledge either a certain amount per point scored and per ringer, or a set amount. Each participant throws 100 horseshoes.

Don Decker won first prize, a 13-foot sailboat, for raising the most money through his sponsor sheets this year. He brought in over $600.

Second prize, a Bulova wrist watch, was awarded to Betty Stong; third prize, a recording telephone, was won by Bill Griffiths; fourth prize, a wall clock, went to Audrey Gross; fifth prize, a Tap-a-Stool, a combina-tion stool and beer cooler, was presented to Rose Valdina; and sixth and seventh prizes, beer steins, were won by Sherry Ferguson and Garry Kulisek.

All participants in the contest received Budweiser T-shirts. A basket of cheer raffle held as part of the event raised $2,700. The winner of a basket of over 30 bottles

of cheer donated by area taverns, liquor stores and individuals, was Cathy Hoey of Newburgh. The association also collected individual contributions from area businesses and organizations for MDA.

Contributors wer CAVU Restaurant; $100; Newburgh Superior Packing, 100; The Bells an Ethan Allen Gallery, $100; the Moose Club of Newburgh, $500; Marin Midland Bank, $100; Infante Woodworking, $50; Eagle Snacks, $100; Miron Lumber Co., $100; Lockwood's Tavern, $100; Red Hook Veterans of Foreign Wars, $200; the Optimist Club of Newburgh, $100; and the Wine Cellar, Fort Montgomery, $50.

The Mid-Hudson Club official presented the check for $12,000 during the recent Muscular Dystrophy telethon which was hosted nationally by Jerry Lewis.

"From Out Of The Mail Bag"

Horseshoe Pitchers* News Digest 1307 Solfisburg Avenue Aurora, Illinois

Dear Mr. Cobb, My name is John S. Chester. I am in the U.S. Army. I'm stationed in Germany. I receive the horseshoe

digest. Even though I am stationed thousands of miles from home, the digest keeps me informed with what is going on in the horseshoe world.

I would just love it if you could print this letter in your December issue. I'd like to say hello to all of my horseshoe pitching friends in Kansas and Missouri.

I would also like to say congratulations to Mr. Merlin Potts on his victory of the Kansas state tourny. I would also like to congratulate Lawrence "Pappy" Cauaney on an excellent job of pitching in the state.

But most of all I would like to wish my parents William and Lois Chester, and my brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thank you! Your friend,

JOHN S. CHESTER

CANDOR, N.Y. MIXED LEAGUE CLOSES—SANC. 81C45 The candor Mixed Horseshoe League concluded its 7th season of organized play with NHPA Award

presentations at the Annual banquet hosted by the Candor American Legion Post 907.The Candor Vets and the Candor American Legion Post 907 have sponsored and supported our league since its inception. Each year the Post has donated money to help us improve our pitching facilities, and volunteers from the post help us with our Annual Tournament.

Our league consists of 12 teams and each team consists of one woman and one man. Our format of play is "mixed" doubles, which gives husbands and wives or boyfriend/girlfriend an opportunity to compete as a team. It is a social function and the first rule is to have a good time. We pitch three 20-shoe games against the same opponent per league night and a round robin league schedule. We use count-all scoring and this year we went back to 100% HDCP which made our league more competitive than it has been in several years.

In addition to Sharon Vrooman and Creighton Diles receiving League Champion awards, High average went to Clyde Morse—42.1% and Josephine Hurst—30.3%. High Game Scratch also went to Clyde Morse—45 points and Josephine Hurst—38 points. High game with handicap went to Michael Horton—80 points and Kelly Horton—76 points. Most Improved Player awards went to Clyde Morse— + 4.4% and to Barbara Barry— + 9.4%. Rookie of the Year Honors went to Brad and Trudy Foster, they also received this year's Sportsmanship Award.

Final League Standings are as follows: 1. Left overs 381/2 pts 7. Toss & Turn 26 pts 2. Frick & Frack 33 pts 8. Who Cares 25 pts 3. Sweet Cheeks 32 pts 9. B & T 25 pts 4. Sundowners 32 pts 10. SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA. LEAGUE CLOSES SEASON Bill Harris and Ray Keohen of San Luis Obispo, California, earned top honors as the "San Luis Obispo

Horseshoe Pitching League" completed its first season. Sanction 87C226. Harris was crowned League Champion with a 33.5 win-17 loss record. He also scored the High Scratch

Game of 103 points and High Handicap Game of 168 points, en route to the Highest Point Average of the season of 80.13 points per game.

Keohen had the Highest Over Point Average of +130, thus earning the Most Improved Player Award and also received the Sportsmanship Wward for his perfect attendance and help throughout the season.

The league uses the 50 shoe, count-all points, singles, 90% handicap system, each Sunday each player pitches three games (which takes no more than two hours). It's working great and now that their league has gotten off to a good start (learning the do's & don'ts) they look forward to next year. This year they had 20 players; next year they plan on two leagues and/or 40 players. All the players think it's great to be able to score all points they earn with no cancellation. All games are played using the round-robin card, therefore making the setup of who pitches where and when very easy.

For information concerning the above league, write to Bill Harris, P.O. Box 4418, San Luis Obispo, Calif. 93403.

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/January, 1988

GRANDPA MISSED THE TOURNAMENT By STEWART SNYDER

This was to have been his favorite tournament of the year—marked on his August calendar, circled in red; courts nearby, forty-five minutes down the freeway, and little early-morning traffic. For weeks he looked forward to challenging and being challenged, to show that the oid pitching spirit was still pulsing with life (if not with accuracy).

Preparation filled the evening before. His trusty Allen shoes filed smooth on the holding side, spray painted afresh, both sides, and put away to carry. A checklist tallied—everything needed was there; a little snap lock box filled with scorekeeper quarters; an aspirin box with a couple pills; a bandage or two for that middle finger on his pitching hand; calipers and metal straightedge; a pick up stick to ease a troublesome back; a wiping cloth for clay-slippery shoes.

This preparation preceded lunch fixing and cool drink arranged. It'll be hot tomorrow on sun-filled courts; 100 plus today. Surely, tomorrow will be the same.

Evidence of heat, just revealed. An ornithologic indicator par excellence; a Robin plopped down on gravel and hop-hopped onto a garden pool-side rock, both wings draping to the ground to make known its discomfort from unaccustomed heat; edged cautiously to the pool, looking this way and that lest the neighbor's lurking torn cat be near. All this preceding a quick hop onto a foreplaced wading rock, then a quick dip down breast first and splash, splash; a quick uprising, then bottom down and a quick tail splash, splash—no cat showing on the horizon; this up-down splash-splash procedure repeated three times before flying away to sunbathe on the lawn.

Tomorrow is sure to be hot, as today. Our old horseshoe pitcher would wilt on sunbaked courts, wide-brim straw hat or not, and envy the cooling splash of yesterday's Robin.

In the kitchen a breakfast planned, laid out for quick preparation; oatmeal and raisins soaking; bacon and eggs; a hearty meal to last the pitching day.

Preparation almost completed; trousers and shirt of summer lightness; elastic supporter for right knee not to be forgotten—nothing's wrong with the knee—a bad pitching habit allows an occasional forward swung shoe to strike behind the knee with sanguinary results.

OK! Into bed by nine o'clock behind closed door; no interference from TV. Ten hour's sleep lay ahead to charge an aging battery. Ten o'clock, eleven, twelve. His Grandma's old windup clock strikes out dutifully the slow-passing hours.

The man's hungry! Maybe that's why he can't sleep. Down to the kitchen; a brown sugar sandwich and milk, then back to bed.

At one o'clock his wife tiptoed into her single bed, quietly, not to awaken the sleeping man. Three, four, five; the trusty old Seth Thomas exercised its prerogative to strike passing languid hours—it's not sleeping either.

Six forty-five, announced the alarm clock, needlessly, for he was not asleep, had not been asleep. His first sleepless night, ever; never before had occurrred such a malady. (Saw his doctor.)

Your body is maintaining too much fluid, said the expert (he didn't actually say "water on the brain"), but whatever he said didn't make the poor guy feel too good—these doctors! What else could a puzzled MD guess at—in low breath he murmured something to the wife about age!

Now back to getting ready, he staggered toward the kitchen enduring a heavy, dizzy head, grabbing onto furniture to stabilize the stride, and thought—"I'm in no shape to pitch horseshoes, let alone drive forty miles with safety. Back in bed, a guilty impulse surged harshly in thought of giving up; a call for ensuing shame. "No," he told himself, "I'm going to go anyway. I can keep score somehow, visit with friends." So, down to the kitchen again hanging on to first one object then another. "To hell with it," he insisted. "They can get along without me!" Back in bed—did he turn the fire out from under the oatmeal? Again back to the kitchen to verify all's well.

At nine o'clock friend wife stirred, "Aren't you going someplace today?" she asked. "No," he muttered and rolled over in bed, a thing he'd been doing for the last twelve hours.

Yes! they said, the pitching day was hot, so was competition. Could not the enfeebled condition that kept this old pitcher home be classed a blessing in disguise?
