Doctor of Occupational student Therapy Jennifer Landaverde is completing her capstone project at the Lubbock Dream Center. "This capstone project focuses on program development. It involves integrating a series of activity classes using mindful crafts designed to improve self-esteem for individuals at my capstone site," Landaverde said. "The capstone experience will provide an opportunity to increase mental health, holistic health and influence self-esteem by participating in mindful craft classes and increasing community outreach and resources.""The biggest highlight is definitely the people I serve," Landaverde said. "The community here is like a family and they have welcomed me with open arms. With each of my classes, everyone has shared their stories/experiences, and that takes a lot of courage to do in front of more than 20 people, and I appreciate their vulnerability. It is hard to put into words how special these mindful craft classes are to them, but whenever I see them wearing or using their craft it means it was something special to them, and that is what matters. What I learned so far is that people enjoy and need community, most of the people I serve are retired, and they yearn for occupations.""My capstone project is preparing me in more ways than I thought it would to become a well-rounded occupational therapist. I have become more aware of issues the geriatric populations face that have not crossed my mind. Community health is important and it is often overlooked because we mainly see patients after an injury. If we took more measures to educate our community on healthy aging and preventative care, we would increase the well-being and the quality of life of so many and I hope to apply this more as a future clinician." #OTMonth #SHPRedRaider

Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science student Justin Le says, "From the program, I made many friends while also gaining research and leadership experience. With my research, I felt like I was helping to create something that could make a difference in the world. With my position as the President of the TTUHSC Medical Laboratory Science Student Association (MLSSA), I felt like I could create a community for medical laboratory professionals where everyone could share their hardships and provide guidance for each other. I would recommend the program to anyone interested in the laboratory or wanting to enter the medical field."Le is currently completing his preceptorship at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. "We receive every type of patient imaginable," Le said. "Because of this, I've seen diseases and pathogens that I thought I would only see in textbooks. The rotation is also very hands-on, allowing me to fully apply the skills I learned in school and help patients by sending out quality test results. By the end of every departmental rotation, I had enough experience to do almost everything (under the watchful eye of my mentors).""During my preceptorship, I learned about the importance of laboratory professionals and how the results we send out can affect a patient. Missing something could directly harm the patient or cause a misdiagnosis. Although we do not have direct patient contact, our work is a large part of what allows physicians to make an accurate diagnosis and treat appropriately. They may just look like samples and labels, but behind every sample is a patient wanting to be treated."Le says, "After graduation, I plan to use my experience from the MLS program and work in the lab while studying for the MCAT. From there, I hope to take what I've learned and apply it to pursuing a career in medicine." #LabWeek #SHPRedRaider
